Fraction Calculator: Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide

Do the four operations on two fractions with simplified answers.

How to use it

  1. Enter the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) of each fraction.
  2. Choose +, −, × or ÷ between them.
  3. The answer updates instantly, simplified, with a mixed number and decimal when they apply.

How it works

To add or subtract, fractions need a common denominator: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. To multiply, multiply tops and bottoms: 2/3 × 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.

The calculator simplifies by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

Questions

Can I enter negative fractions?

Yes, put the minus sign on the numerator, for example -1 over 2.

What if the denominator is zero?

A fraction cannot have a zero denominator, so the tool shows a message instead of an answer.
